Hunting with Trickery

The Anasazi wove huge nets, as big as 240 feet long (73 meters) and 4 feet high (1.2 meters), to trap small animals. They strung their nets across large gullies. They painted a round, black circle in the middle of the net that looked like an escape hole to trick rabbits and other small animals to run right into it. The technique was so successful that hunters went home after a short day’s work with enough food to feed their families.

But there was plenty of wild game to hunt, including bighorn sheep, antelope, beaver, turkey, and deer. Edible seeds, nuts, prickly pear fruit, and wild tomatoes were also an important part of the Mogollon diet.

Like the Hohokam, early Mogollon lived in single-family pit houses grouped in villages. Later, the Mogollon built large cliff dwellings high up in natural caves with many families living together.
